A Welsh Social Network - Rhwydwaith Cymdeithasol Cymreig

Hey, Everybody, Should We Have a New Name and a New Logo?

When Ceri and I started this network, we took the name from a blog that he was doing and our original idea was that we wanted to make a place on the internet where people of Welsh descent in the US could go to find each other and to find out about Wales and where we could all learn more about Welsh-American history.

Since then, it's really turned into something a lot bigger and we now have members from everywhere: people who live in Wales, the US, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Australia, Uruguay and elsewhere all over and so I was thinking that maybe we need a logo and a name that includes everyone. Maybe the americymru name and logo could just be a Welsh-American sub-group.

Does anyone have any input or ideas or anything they'd like to on this?

Meical,
You also seem to forget that St. Patrick was Welsh!

I've only just noticed this Tam. ST DAVID WAS IRISH WAS HE? SINCE WHEN? Flaming 'eck! I quote below so we can clear up this fallacy once and for all!:

"For details of the life of Dewi, we depend mainly on his biographer, Rhigyfarch. He wrote Buchedd Dewi (the life of David) in the 11th century. Gerallt Gymro (Giraldus Cambrensis), who wrote a book about his travels through Wales in the 12th century, also gives some information about Dewi's early life. Dewi died in the sixth century, so nearly five hundred years elapsed between his death and the first manuscripts recording his life. As a result, it isn't clear how much of the history of Dewi's life is legend rather than fact.

However, both sources say, so we can be relatively certain, that Dewi was a very gentle person who lived a frugal life. It is claimed that he ate mostly bread and herbs - probably watercress, which was widely used at the time. Despite this supposedly meagre diet, it is reported that he was tall and physically strong.

Dewi is said to have been of royal lineage. His father, Sant, was the son of Ceredig, who was prince of Ceredigion, a region in South-West Wales. His mother, Non, was the daughter of a local chieftain. Legend has it that Non was also a niece of King Arthur.

Dewi was born near Capel Non (Non's chapel) on the South-West Wales coast near the present city of Saint David. We know a little about his early life - he was educated in a monastery called Hen Fynyw, his teacher being Paulinus, a blind monk. Dewi stayed there for some years before going forth with a party of followers on his missionary travels."

The poor bastard must be turning in his grave, wherever that might be!

No, actually it IS with a double "D".. Wow, you need to sit on a tranquilizer dart and calm down a little.. Some members here have a limited social life or need to get laid a bit more.. Put that energy into your girlfriend or boyfriend (if you have one)..

Grammar moderator here. "Y Ddraig Goch" is of course correct. But take away the 'y' and it becomes "Draig Goch". No words in Welsh begin with "dd" unless they're mutated.

"Ddraig Goch!" would be correct: "O, Red Dragon!"

But anyway: 'gwell Cymraeg crap na Saesneg slic'! :)

OK....Messrs Davies and Phillips..we appreciate that you are enjoying a full and frank discussion of your differences here and its all very entertaining for the rest of us too BUT might I respectfully suggest that you take a time out,, choose your seconds and meet with pistols at dawn. That way you could settle the matter while the rest of us concentrate on the logo issue.

Hahaha!!-- You have to have a sense of humor to appreciate some of my commentary.. My gosh, is everyone on here a crusty old fart? And might I add William Wallace, aka "Braveheart", the warrior for Scottish independence-- was of Welsh descent, even though he's born in Scotland.. The surname "Wallace" is actually derived from "Welshman"..

Well...thats that then....back to the substantive issue of designing a new logo. I reckon we should keep the name as is...but we certainly need to incorporate the Maple Leaf into the design somewhere or somehow. We dont want to lose the dragon but we would'nt mind a design that incorporated the Canadian emblem somehow. We have a fair few Canadian members and we would like to attract more. Any ideas?

Sheesh! I didn't realize what time it was with all this fun (2:19am)!.. I'm off!
But if you want to see a quick design I did for a Welsh Canadian group a few years back,
then go here:

I don't know if that stirs any ideas.. Hope it does!

That's a nice, uncomplicated design. Uncomplicated is good.

Thanks for that compliment Gaabi! Some of my more simpler/effective designs are knocked together in a rather short period of time..

Yep. Complicated is the kiss of death in a logo - you want that zen combo of three things + three colors, max.
