My friend Darren makes Love spoons for a living. Dont really know about the history of the love spoon, google it and I bet you'll find out.
But I dont think its unique in world cultures, seem to recall a Fijian betrothall spoon.
Woodcraft is a common 'gwerin' theme, Dad made hand crafted walking sticks made to measure for his friends and I still got one he made for me with a dogs head handle

I think the love-spoon custom started sometime in the late 1500s. The first time I learned of them was doing research for my writing, and I remember they were too recent for my late-15th century character to be familiar with. Do you have any tips or interesting tidbits about them?

"'gwerin' theme"?

Hi Rogue, ye GWERIN is the colloquial term for or Welsh peasentry, like we'd call ourselves it a bit like the brothers in Dertroit n places over there in the states use the 'N' WORD if you understand where Im coming from?

Haha, ye so we are like white 'N' people!!!
In fact theres a good song by Bryn Fon called 'gwlad y rasda gwyn' Land of the white rasta, 1990, brilliant it is

Okay, so is it considered impolite if someone not of that group uses the term, or is it like "paisan" for Italian-Americans, which is inoffensive (and even a little playful)?

You know what, my dad wasn't even Welsh but he made me a little wooden purse when I was about 5 years old that I carried to church with me every sunday. It was replete with mirror and my name in metal lettering on the outside. That's a happy memory!

Those walking sticks sound interesting. I just collected a bunch of sticks the beavers cut down from saplings. They have been driving and I thought to give them out to my family to make their own walking sticks. I like using them just the way they are. That is how I developed the 'collection'. When I went out walking and came upon the beaver dam, I picked up one to help me over the marshy areas and carried them home. They have a nice weight and balance to them whatever length they are.
I guess I should look up gwerin, unless you feel like translating for me.
Do you have photos of your walking stick.

Oh, i just read what gwerin means...thanks already. Hmmm. Right now we are trying to be non-consumers. It was an experiment before the economy went south.
