I would think that we Emily and I agree that DNA is the best way to solve our genealogy puzzle.
Emily Doolin Aulicino Comment by Emily Doolin Aulicino on December 28, 2009 at 9:42pm
Yes, Wendell, you are correct. They do not give you the result so you must use some computer skills to get it. I have two pages of directions for the Y and for the mtDNA if anyone needs it to get their result. I don't believe it is easy to contact people who match you, however. That is my goal with testing....to find others who match me so we can work together to find that common ancestor

There are many who don't have the patience to glean their info, but maybe it is worth it to them for free. ALSO, it can take months to years to get your info on their website. Frankly, in my opinion, you usually get what you pay for.

Sorenson's goal was to show that everyone is related. He asked for DNA and a pedigree chart to show that. Geneticists have told us for years we are all related. How in terms of genealogy is the concern. If I can't contact those who relate to me, then the whole think is worthless to me. However, others have used his company. I know many who have switched...whatever works for you is grand. I'm always pleased to see people testing. Genealogy isn't as accurate without DNA testing.

I just do NOT want people to be disappointed in what they get from various companies. You really, really must have your goals and see what company best works for you. My blog site helps you with that.

Best wishes,
E

The site I gave you for DNA was founded by Sorenson who was a Utah Millionaire that left a foundation to continue Genealogy DNA research. They do not give you your results back, but you can figure out what your markers are once they put it on line. They do both the y and mtDNA. I both paid for my results and sent it to them and receive forty two markers that are all the same.
My interest in the program is to identify cousins. Not for profit.

True....I think we'll probably tolerate that though. If I alter the the hyperlink I lose any links to the page that might be out there.

No worries:) I cant believe that no one ( myself included ) spotted that before. Many thanks for pointing it out.

GENETIC GENEALOGY...

First, as a retired teacher whose grammar and spelling isn't prefect, but who is going nuts about the spelling of Genealogy on this group....Can it please be corrected? THANKS.

Next: Please visit my blog for several reasons. I worry that many of you who elect to do a DNA test will hop at the cheapest (i.e., FREE) test you find. This can be a BIG mistake. My blog archives guide you through how to pick a testing company as well as explain the basics of genetic genealogy.

AND....there is a company who can now test autosomal markers with accuracy. With this type of test from 23andMe (www.23andMe.com) you can not only learn about your health (if you elect to test for that portion) and/or find cousins anywhere along any of your chromosomes. This means men and women can test and determine if they are cousins. Formerly with only the Ydna only men could test to match men. With the mtDNA only women could test to match women or men, as men carry their mother's mtDNA. NOW, you can test and with good genealogy records you can work together to find the common ancestor across gender lines. Note the Success Story on my blog that I have posted on my discovery of a sixth cousin once removed.

PLEASE do not buy a DNA test without learning what it can and cannot do for you. I don't want anyone disappointed because they don't understand. You are most welcome to email me directly with your questions. I don't visit this site much...I've no time as my email box and speaking engagements keep me very busy.

I have just added an interesting part of the book "Welsh Settlement in Pennsylvania" to my Wales and Welsh page located at http://drwilliams.org/iDoc/wales.htm . I have now several hundred folks in my database originating in Wales. I also have several other links that might be of interest to researchers. I also have the photos I took in October from my trip there.
Enjoy...........
Happy New Year

There is a company that is doing free DNA work in Salt Lake City Utah USA. http://www.smgf.org/index.jspx From what I understand this project was started in Malad Idaho because of all of the Welsh that settled in that area. They will send a kit with mouth wash that you would swish in your mouth and send it and four generations back to them. It takes about a year for them to put it on line (it's private). It would then tell each of us who our common ancestors are so we can help each other.
