Many congratulations to those of you who have managed to get back so far with research of your Welsh ancestors. I started researching my family history about 30 years ago. Began with the Welsh side, and then more or less gave up when I reached the surname Williams. Up until then there were Edwards, Jones, Lewis etc. I remember being at Ysgol Bryn Offa in Wrexham, and there being 7 Williams children in my class, all unrelated (?)! Concentrated on the Cornish family (Mother's side) since then.

Hello Cousin Emily. Let me know how close?

I can provide you with details throughout of our male descendant line from Prince Rhodri ap Owain Gwynedd. It goes down the same line for quite a way as that claimed, and proven in court, by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir ( which later died out in the male line ) I do understand that this makes for interesting Ydna comparisions, though I don't see this as likely to help with any confirming proof of the existence of, and also the surrounding Legend of, his reputed half-brother, Prince Madoc? But I am inexpert in the science, and would gladly know more....

I will email you direct, as you kindly suggest

Richard...

I am also a descendant of Prince Rhodri ap Owain Gwynedd! Hello very distant cousin!

Congratulations on your genealogy-DNA discoveries. That is remarkable that your all male line is from Prince Rhodri. Have you tested your Ydna as yet? Please get at least 37 markers done, if not. You are most welcome to contact me directly if you have questions as to why, etc. My email: aulicino@hevanet.com

Glad to join this Genealogy Group, soon after joining the Madoc Group. There is a connection. Prince Madoc who may have been the first European to "discover" America, sailing from Wales in 1170, may have been a half-brother of my ancestor Prince Rhodri ap Owain Gwynedd, from who we ( W-E's ) descend ( rather remarkably Father to Son throughout ) Another interest, which will be appreciated by Emily especially is that a couple of years ago, it was proved by DNA analysis that I have very many "cousins" in America ( hitherto totally unsuspected ) who descend from John Clough who sailed from London in 1635. Research carried out by Sheila Andersen ( who introduced me to Americymru ), with the assistance of Oxford Ancestors on the DNA, found identical results between a Descendant of John Clough in the U.S., and a descendant of Sir Richard Clough of Denbigh ( Merchant of Antwerp and London ), an ancestor of mine who died 1570. ( A great uncle of mine had his name changed from W-E to Clough by Royal Warrant. Sheila is genealogist for the John Clough Genealogical Society ( founded 70 years ago ) www.johncloughgs.com

Welcome, Emily! I'd really like to hear more about genetic genealogy and some advice on how to find things - how did you track ancestors that didn't have surnames? Did you find those manuscripts at the Family HIstory Library in SLC? I've been there once but only for an hour and hardly even got to look around, it's an AMAZING place.

Greetings everyone! I'm a new recruit thanks to Ceri!

I've researched my genealogy for over 40 yrs and have been to Wales three times where I found one of my ancestral homes and stayed there...would you believe it was a B&B.

My Evans family came from fferm Fron Goch, Marioneth, North Wales in 1698. This is the town Frongoch near Bala. My line lived in the home there from 1625 to 1698 when four brothers and a sister migrated to the Welsh Tract in Pennsylvania thanks to Wm. Penn and the British religious persecutions. At that time they did not have surnames, but took them upon their arrival to America.

Prior to living in Frongoch they resided in Yspitty Ifan. This line goes back to many of the Princes of Wales. I was very fortunate to find the old Welsh manuscripts in Salt Lake City and a family pedigree.

Other related Welsh surnames: Jenkins, Rogers, Bevins.

Please check out my URLs below. I do presentations on Genetic Genealogy and writing one's childhood memories and family stories. Genetic Genealogy is the use of DNA testing to aid traditional genealogy research. There is a Welsh DNA Project if anyone is interested. Just email me directly if you have questions or are interested: aulicino@hevanet.com

Best wishes,
Emily
