I have been working on my Welsh family tree for years. Before my Father passed away, he gave me the exact names and dates of birth for all of my Grandmother's siblings and her parents, my Great Grandparents. That helped get me to circa 1810-1820 where I am currently stuck.

My Welsh family surnames are Williams, Jeremiah, Williams-Hughes and Jenkins.

My Grandmother was born in Swansea Glamorgan Wales and died here in the United States when my Father was only 12 years old. My Grandmother had one of the most common Welsh surnames: Williams, and I thought that her Mother's surname being Jeremiah would help my search.

However, thus far I have only been able to verify the addresses where both sets of my Great Great Grandparents Jeremiah and Great Great Grandparents Williams lived during the 1880 census in Swansea.

I was able to verify the occupations of both my Great Great Grandfather Jeremiah and Great Grandfather Williams from a photocopied Swansea Glamorgan Wales Trades Directory which I found online.

Has anyone tried The Welsh-American Genealogical Society?

The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth has some pretty good resources too - http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=247

If you family emigrated to Ohio try the Wales-Ohio project - http://ohio.llgc.org.uk/

I managed to go back far as my 4grgrandfather but now I'm up against a wall. The break I had to trace my grandfather from Wales was his passport application. It really helped alot. I first tried to find his naturalization papers which was useless until I came across his passport. It had his age destination, how long lived in the states. Of course I found the passport application on ancestry.com , this is subscription site.. There is good site that is free, go to called freebmd.rootsweb.com It has a search quite a few birth, marriage, and death records. There is also familysearch.org

Happy New year Ruth...we are hoping to develop this group in the new year and make it a much more useful resource area for genealogists...watch this space for details. Meanwhile please feel free to contribute any tips or guides you may have. I havent tried tracing my family tree yet but I'm hoping to start soon. I guess we need a lot more info here on how to use the British records etc.

Hello--I'm new to this group! I've been doing genealogy for ages, and I'm trying to focus on some of my Welsh ancestors now. Some of my (Welsh) family names are: Griffin (probably anyway!), Jones, Price, Benion, and Matthews/Mathias/Matthis/Mathis (clearly they couldn't seem to decide on a spelling they liked, lol!).

Most of these ancestors came to either Virginia or North Carolina, USA, generally during the 18th century. There is a lot of intermarriage, which I think was pretty common. In fact there is a section of NC (near where I think some of my Welsh ancestors lived) called the "Welsh tract".

I guess they didn't want to have too much to do with all those Anglo-Saxons and Germans in the area!!! ;-)

Hello to all!

Susan,
There are a few ways to search for the place of origin of an early emigrant,(1600s to 1700s) from Wales. Can you share more information such as the name of your relative, did they marry and have any children in Wales or marry somewhere else? When and where did the emigrant die? What are the names of the children of the emigrant?

Could anyone suggest the best way to find from where in Wales a relative from the 1700's would have come to the USA? I have birth and marriage dates and other info. Thanks!
