Book Scanning the Easy Way

I have written before about book scanners. They are divided into two basic designs: they are either huge mechanical monstrosities that turn pages automatically or else they are small and simple devices that scan bound books manually. The Plustek OpticBook A300 falls into the latter category: small and easy to operate. The Plustek OpticBook A300 scans thick books without unbinding or dismantling them, so it is a perfect solution for genealogists, libraries, schools, graphic designers, publishing companies, hospitals, law firms and even the financial institutions. Plustek has a video that illustrates the OpticBook A300 in operation and shows why it...

Did Alcohol Cause Civilization?

US archaeologist Patrick McGovern thinks our Neolithic ancestors turned to agriculture so they could be sure of alcohol. The expert on identifying traces of alcohol in prehistoric sites reckons the thirst for a brew was enough of an incentive to start growing crops. McGovern speculates that a prehistoric human picked up some dropped fruit from the ground and popped it unsuspectingly into his or her mouth. The first effect was nothing more than an agreeably bittersweet flavor spreading across the palate. But as alcohol entered the bloodstream, the brain started sending out a new message -- whatever that was, I...

RedLaser for the iPhone

This article has nothing to do with genealogy, but it is one of the most useful programs I own so I thought I would write about it. Do you own an Apple iPhone? If so, get RedLaser. It costs $1.99 and it more than paid for itself the first time I used it. I have now saved perhaps $100 in the past few weeks because of this program. RedLaser converts your iPhone into an indispensable shopping companion. Have you ever seen a store employee in a grocery store or major chain store scanning product bar codes? Now you can do...

Terry,
To find more details about David Roberts born in Merionethshire around 1793-4 you should search the available marriage indexes for Merionethshire. With his wife's name it is much more likely to find the correct marriage in those indexes. Without the wife's name it is still possible to get a few leads to investigate.

Another possibility exists if you know which religion David Roberts followed while in the United States. Several Welsh American periodicals were published in the 19th century in America and often provide details about families including their place of origin in Wales.

An index to many Welsh emigrants listed in a number of Welsh American periodicals is titled, "Emigrants From Gwynedd To USA 1795-1932" may be worth searching for details on David Roberts.

I started my geneology in 2005. Since then I found out my many times great grandmother was the Princess of Wales, Nest Verch Rhys. Since I found that out I have been trying to find a picture or portrait of her to add to my tree. I have traced 4 lines of my genealogy and have gone back to 82 bc. I love tracing my family. I have never been to Wales. I would love to but do not have the money at this time. Any ideas?

I started doing the family tree about 10 years ago. After years of searching have finally traced ones to when they came into the states, unfortunately havent found much help or information in their native countries.
My Welsh line, David Roberts was born in Merionthshire Co. around 1793-4. His gravestone is in Washburn Cem., Black Hawk Co., Iowa and reads, died june 30, 1883 in his 89th year. Have not been able to make a concrete connection to anyone. He married in Wales (no name) and immigrated to NY where he lived for a number of years in the Oneida Co. area where his youngest son Robert David Roberts was born in 1838. In 1870 i find David with his son's family in Iowa . Robert married Sarah McArthur (born in Scotland) in 1868.
I have used ancestry.com and the family search along with death certificates and etc. Yes the family search has a lot of info but its not always accurate as to the connections as the info is not required to be fact based and in some cases is wishful thinking on the part of the submitter. So although it is good for leads, you need to verify connections. My mother-in-law is a member of the church and a submitter on info and have seen her submit info on the premiss that it just has to be right as she can find no other connection.

I live in Wales but some of my ancestors emigrated to USA. My Samuel family went to PA and my Martin family to Idaho and Utah. I have Perkins ancestors there.
Ancestry is excelent and also Mormon family search.
My other links are Edwards, Davies, Meredith, Rowlands, Phelps, Harries, Jones, Griffiths etc
All my family links are celtic and most of my family settled in Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil.
My Merediths can be traced back to 12th century and are supposed to be descendants of Owain Glyndwr.
My Walbeoffe's were french knights that came from Normandy with William and settled in Brecon.

Hello all,
I'm researching my Griffiths/Jones/Parry family from the Penmaenmawr/Dwygyfylchi area. I've got some sketchy info back to 1793 with the Griffiths'. Jones is, of course, difficult and my great-grandmother, Ann(e) Parry born in Llandudno, seems to have appeared out of nowhere. I'd love to make some Penmaenmawr connections and share info.
Best,
Marilyn

Hail, all! According to my genealogist (Garan Gwyn -- see below), my great-grandfather, David Jonathan Lloyd, was born to Thomas Lloyd and Hanna (nee Rowe) in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan... Thomas and Hanna were married there on Oct. 17, 1859 "in what was then the Dowlais Church." I would love to know where Thomas and Hanna were from, and am trying to find a list of churches that existed there in 1859. Anyone think they might have some clues for me? Luck to you all!

Shwmae! (It's about all I know in Welsh...so I've got to use it! LOL) My ancestral tie to Wales, that I have been able to verify, is through Thomas Morgan, born 10 Mar 1788 in Ty Mawr Wybrnant, Penmachno, Betws-Y-Coed, Wales, although I have seen other places of birth listed for him. He married Joanna Jones, born 9 Feb 1791 in Llanigon, Breconshire, Wales. Because of a fire the apparently destroyed a lot of records (I don't remember when that happened) there are a lot of holes in my research. I'd love to hear if anyone has made any connections or has more information on this line. Thanks!

My ancestors came from "England" according to records, but I am sure that they originated in Wales..... I've been trying to figure out how to research in Wales to get some hope of finding my true roots.

If any one has any ideas, I would be very grateful.

I'm excited to find this group! I've recently started a group project on Family Tree DNA to explore Mathews, Virginia, and especially the county's Welsh roots. My ancestors there include Lewis, Jones, Davis, Hudgins, Williams, and more.
