"A Sense of Place" - A Photographic Competition

Croeso/Welcome to the Left Coast Eisteddfod Visual Image Competition. Here you can submit THREE photographs in the categories defined below and compete for a first place cash prize of $150 ( 100GBP approx ) in each category. Your photos need not be of Wales but please do read the detailed rules for submission below. Above all...have fun. Best of luck everyone!

In defining the theme for this years competition our judge , Glyn Davies made the following comments regarding content and submissions:- "What is it about our environment, whether landscape or people, that makes it so particular to us, the artists? We could all photograph a tree on a hillside, a wave crashing over a rock or even a pretty person in the street, but what identifies them with YOUR locality ? As the judge, based in Wales, I am interested in seeing photographs which give me a better idea about the characteristics and atmosphere of the artists homeland. This does NOT mean that images have to be ordinary, they can be moody, dramatic and immaculately composed but I want them to show me that we are all living in amazing and DIFFERENT places. I want the artists to celebrate what is special about their own location and culture. This way, not only do we get to see amazing images, but we can all learn more about each other in the process."

How To Submit Your Image

Two categories of images may be submitted in this competition. The final submission date is Sept 15th 2010 and the winners will be announced at the Eisteddfod ( October 2010 ):-

  • A Photographic Image - either from film or digital cameras which generally represents the subject without adding or subtracting elements. Please feel free to add text explaining why you thinks the image is important - "I do not believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, images can be too easily misinterpreted." - Glyn Davies.

  • A Photographic Illustration - this is any image which has been substantially adjusted and manipulated by whatever means, digital or analogue, and which is generally non representational of a real person/place/event. The manipulation MUST be relevant to a theme or idea, manipulation for manipulation's sake will not be given serious consideration. The idea should be put in writing to accompany the image.

Images must be loaded as a discussion posted in this group OR may be hosted on another site and linked in a discussion in this group. Competitors may submit three images in each category for a total of not more than six images per person. Minors may have images submitted on their behalf by their legal guardians. Non Americymru members are welcome to submit entries to this competition. They can do so by emailing their submissions or links to americymru@gmail.com for inclusion on the Group Discussion page. If non members wish to have a link to a website or blog included as part of their submission they must link back to us. Please email for further details

Here's the URL to my gallery of digitally reworked compositions. I thinka ll of these are exmples of this category, some extreme examples. One of these might make it into this years competition. But I hope I can find time to shoot new work for the eisteddfod.

Ok, where do we find last year's winners?
Ceri Shaw Comment by Ceri Shaw on January 22, 2010 at 4:51pm
I cant speak directly for our judge in this instance but I imagine he will decide which category each photo falls into. I would think anything that has been manipulated with either Photoshop or the GIMP would qualify for the Photographic Illustration category. Also you might look at last years winner in this category for a better idea. Glyn?

I'm interested in submitting photos but have a question or two. Doesn't everyone?

I did not see any place where one would indicate into which category the entry is to be placed. Maybe that is self-evident (to the judges) upon viewiing each entry, such that no category designation is required?

I am not sure I understand the criteria of the 2nd category. I have MY understanding, but not sure that it matches yours!

A Photographic Illustration - this is any image which has been substantially adjusted and manipulated by whatever means, digital or analogue, and which is generally non representational of a real person/place/event. The manipulation MUST be relevant to a theme or idea, manipulation for manipulation's sake will not be given serious consideration. The idea should be put in writing to accompany the image.

Are there any examples (of the 2nd category) already posted - so we can get a better idea of what is meant 'substantially adjusted and manipulated' and generally non representational of a real person/place/event?

Thank you.

Hi Mona...basically EC=Entrecard Credit...its a unit of digital currency which people use to buy ads on the Entrecard network. We are running a promotion to attract bloggers to compete in the Left Coast Eisteddfod. http://entrecard.com Its not something that site members need to bother about unless thay are also members of Entrecard. We were thinking of doing a couple more promos along these lines to broaden he appeal of the LCE.
