I found some nice links for Linux live CD ISOs. One is a blog with a section on Forensics CDs. The other is a large list of ISOs, among which are some security distros and also many specialized CDs on eveything from accounting to metal-working.

Here is the page of links for forensics stuff.

This is the Live CD List.

Thanks for the article, Ashley. I often end up going, willy-nilly, to linuxforums.org for answers when Googling for something. I did look up MAS Media, Inc., and there seemed to be precious little about them. Most of what IS there has to do with whois info and that. What do you know about them?

I received this from LinuxForums: http://www.linuxforums.org/

Ashley,
Briefly, I started with Slackware 96(tm), tried Red Hat, used Debian for a short time, was with SuSe for a long time, and finally settled on Debian and Ubuntu.
We have to use RHEL in my business, because you have to run Oracle on it. But I built 3 squids on Debian Etch this year, and set up a snort IDS on Debian.
I inherited qmail and djbdns in this job, also on RHEL, and so I have accept Red Hat as a fact of life.

In my last job, the Hearst corporate types tried to force us to go all RH, but I successfully argued that our web farm had to stay on Debian (we are highly-customized, need the freedom to compile our own kernels, etc.).

So I guess I'm a Debian stiff after a long love affair with SuSe. There's probably a joke in there somewhere about all my distros having girls' names, but I'll leave that to the imagination.

I have visited the sites for the distros you've mentioned, and they are indeed interesting additions to the field. I especially like the wallpaper at the top of the elivecd.org home page! I want to try Elive in Virtualbox now. If I like it as much as you have, I might set up a workstation on the job.

Ok well I tried this a couple of days ago & lost everything due to the system updating. I am going to be as brief as I can because I do not want to take several hours to compose this.
With that said, i have been using Linux on my systems for a long time now. I started with Red Hat Linux (RHL) version 5.x or something and I was so impressed with it that I firmly believed that it was going to overtake the desktop ( something I no longer believe in).
Over the years it has been successes & struggles, but all the better for it. When Red Hat discontinued its box set & decided to focus on its Enterprise edition & leave RHL to merge with Fedora Core (FC) I was so upset that I switched to using SuSe and the wen back to FC after a few generations was kicked out.
I have been fairly steady with sticking to Fedora ever since, that is until Fedora 9 came out it would not install my NVIDIA driver even though the headers were all install it said they were not. Although I manage to disable SELinux at the Kernel level it was very irritating that Fedora integrated it so deeply. The also use the latest Gnome desktop/ Gnome Display Manager (GDM) which is now non configurable, except the background. Which Fedora claims that the GDM configuration tool is being redesigned, which is still being worked on apparently since Fedora 11 is still using the GDM from Fedora 9.
These frustrations & because Dell was distributing systems preloaded with Ubuntu I gave into the suggestions to try Ubuntu. I never really though much of because it was just the latest in Debian spin-offs that had gained a lot of popularity. I used it for a couple of generations & it was OK for the most part. I had a lot of trouble getting a desktop that I became familiar with & learned to love was called Enlightenment (E17) going. Even with the easy_E17.sh script which downloads & installs everything for you, when I attempted to login to it , it would just log me back out.
So I started looking around again. I have come over two other distributions that have caught my eye. One called OpenGEU and the other was Elive. they caught my eye because the focused on Enlightenment (E17) as the default desktop environment and was pushing some special effects that I saw emerging in Fedora called Compiz Fusion. I recall a long time ago then Compiz Fusion was just getting started I had posted queriwes on the Enlightnment mailing list about how to get compiz working in the Enlightenment environment, which I was told was impossible.
Well I downloaded the Live Cd ISOs for both OpenGeU & Elive. OpenGEU was quite nice especially since it is built around the Ubuntu flavor of Debian, but however the package that gives the Compiz effects Ecomorph (Compiz port for Enlightenment) did not seem to be apparent active on the OpenGEU Live CD. But when I tried the Elive Live CD it was so impressive that I now have Elive on both of my systems. Elive is not a Ubuntu flavor but is based on Debian itself. I have not been so excited since I first started using Linux!
I would highly recomend at least trying the Elive + Compiz Live CD.
here is the web page:
Now as with most distributions there is ample Welsh language support, but Enlintenment seems to have some support for the welsh language, though not completely. Which brings me to what happened to the Cymrux distrobution? In 2003 Kevin Donnelly started tranlating & compiling a Welsh localized version of Linux. Her is the article:
which led to a Live CD called Cymrux:
which is also tied to this site:
When you click on "start translating" you get the message "Kyfieithu is no longer active". The Live CD for Cymrux is not available for download anywhere that I can see. I hope Kevin can continue his work on it soon.
Any way, what are your impressions of the different distributions available?
