Today is Mark Twain's birthday ( see THIS blogpost ) He is the author of the following famous/infamous quote about Welsh surnames:-

“Names are not always what they seem. The common Welsh name BZJXXLLWCP is pronounced Jackson.”

An excellent choice Brian. I've added the 1905 edition to the Americymru Library and I will make the 2001 revised edition Book of The Month. Diolch.

I am not sure if this is the way to nominate a book, but I have a favorite one that anyone interested with Celtic (Welsh and Irish) mythology needs to have in the library: Celtic Myth and Legend, Revised Edition, by Charles Squire, (2001, originally written in 1905). The first half of the book deals with Irish Celtic myths, while the second half deals with British (mostly Welsh) myths (like King Arthur, Branwen, and Bran). It can be a little slow going because of his having written this in the early 1900s (more "flowery" language, perhaps) but if you want the best translations of these stories, this book is a classic in its field.

Hello all. I am pretty new to Americymru and this group, but I was wondering if the books are limited to nonfiction or if any book that is supposed to take place in Wales is fair game?

This months first selection is "The Dark Philosophers" by Gwyn Thomas. I will be adding "Journey through Wales and Description of Wales" as suggested by Tom Williams as our second selection later on today. You can Giraldus Cambrensis online HERE.
Tom Williams Comment by Tom Williams on July 9, 2008 at 3:22pm
Is this where one would make a suggestion?

Geraldus Cambrensis' "Journey through Wales and Description of Wales", a 12th century account of a walk through Wales!
