Did he live on Ambrose street?? When there was a high tide, especially Spring tide, many of the houses around there used to get flooded. I bet my mother in law would have known your family, old Bangor family and I remember she used to live around ...

Profile Information

Relationship Status:
Married
About Me:
Live in the Rockies.
My father's father was from Bangor, Wales. He came to the US around 1916, I have yet to find his passenger record. He married an English women from Birkenhead who joined him in NYC 1916. They married the following day of her arrival in New York City.

My grandfather, David Owen Hughes, loved his heritage and was Secretary for the St. David's Society in New York City for many years until his unexpected death in 1947. Both my husband and myself love anything Welsh and have had the pleasure of exploring our past in Bangor.

HI I was born in Liverpool, but my Mum and Dad are from Anglesey, my Mums Mums family (my Nain) where from Bangor.
Bangor is the largest town city to the south side of Anglesey and that is where most went shopping to go out etc etc
I married a man from Bangor whose Mothers family also was one of the old Bangor families
I have my cousin and her daughter who live over on Anglesey, and they do a lot of genology research, give me your Grandfathers name and the little you know and let me ask them ifthey can find anything since they are over there. They will still be able to talk to families in and around bangor,I have no clue if that is a possible but no harm in asking.
My Bangor family also moved to west end, I also had family in Birkenhead.
Its a pity my Mum isn't still alive, she used to go over to visit the family in Brikenhead and they used to go to a Welsh Church there, you never who she might have know!! Alas that route isn't going to take us anywhere.
So looking at the posting below is your Grandfather David Owen Hughes, do you know his parents?
Looking forward to chatting and perhaps helping a little???

I agree, the weath of records is amazing. The downside I found is that in the town clerk's office in Bangor, although they were great at searching and recreating certified copies of birth and marriage records, they would not allow us to see the originals even though they were over 100 years old. The records office in Caernavonshire also housed old census records that were a treasure trove for us. I hope to get back there someday and find my elusive grandfather who came to the US somewhere around 1916, went back to Wales (or Birkenhead) and returned to the US. I've been searching for a passenger record of his for three years! I do know he returned, because in February 1917 his girlfriend arrived in NY and in May gave birth to a little boy. They married the day after she arrived in New York city.

The system of record offices in Wales is quite remarkable. The office in Hawarden was just a few steps from where I was staying-- a plethora of riches! There was really more information preserved there than I was able to fully absorb during my stay and I remained in correspondence for some time. Perhaps the only unfavorable comparison to the US is the rather rigid copyright restrictions. It seemed as though I spent a great deal of time completing permission forms for even the most routine photocopy requests. However, the people were wonderfully helpful; I've donated some material to them since returning home-- hoping that somebody else can enjoy!

Hello Ms Beverly, Great to hear from you. I drove to Colorado springs the other day when it was snowing a bit on Munument hill and you would think that these people have never seen a bit of weather before! I was raised here so I guess I am just used to it. but yes, a nice, little sandy beach with a big umbrella and a big drink with a little umbrella! I have not heard of any Welsh restaurants, or pubs. But you know who,d be the guy to ask, is Ellis Owens. He is very active in the CO Welsh Society. he is also on this site. I make some Welsh dishes sometimes. My favorate is Cock-a-leeky. my old recipe calls for "one large dressed cock". 'kind of scarce 'round these parts, but we make do! lol.

You must be talking about Castlewood Canyon. one of my favorate places! I go there often, in the winter especially cause it is usually snow free. in the summer I like to go to San Isabell national forest area. (its up there near Bishop Castle west of Colorado City) It is a bit of a drive but it is so beautiful!
