Geoff,

I received the book today, but can't get it out of my wife's hands. She thinks it wonderful. I think I'll have to get a magnifying glass to read it though.

Thanks,

Howard

There is no particular dedication. I bought it for myself. I saw it when I visited Wales, but decided that the money I would have to pay in additional airline luggage weight was more than the shipping.

By the way, I wasn't charged shipping. Please bill me and I'll cover it.

Dear Geoff - so glad I found you! I would like to send you some e-mails about my own few findings....compare notes. You have taken on a vast endeavor in collecting so much information, so oft neglected as a field of worthy interest here in America.

I went to the Library in the Civic Centre in Swansea today to present a talk to a local history group. I decided to talk about two stories from Volume 1 - Margaret Williams and Sarah Jacob - and it seemed to be quite well received. Two of my small audience however introduced themselves to me as Americymru members! It has always been a small world but the internet seems to have made it even smaller.

Well, not so sure about the posh bit - I come from good old farmin' stock (with a few Preseli mountain ancestors thrown in)!! Thanks for the details about the book. I've managed to track it down on Amazon, and hope to get it in before we start this year's holiday lets at the beginning of next month.

Hope you're enjoying the lovely weather we've had down here recently!

About Me:
I am a teacher and writer. I live and work in Swansea, where I am Deputy Head of Cefn Hengoed Community School. I also have a regular feature in "Welsh Country Magazine" about notable or infamous graves. My latest book Stories in Welsh Stone deals with the unexpected stories that are hidden behind 15 gravestones from across the country. You can find out more by visiting my website!
The book was published by Welsh Country Magazine and I tell the stories behind the very basic details the headstones contain. These are stories of murder, mystery, starvation, infanticide, poison, injustice, performance enhancing drugs. Sad stories certainly, but stories we need to remember before the words on these decaying stones disappear. And when they do disappear then their stories will disappear too.
We mustn't let it happen.
Every grave tells a story, of course they do. Some are just a little more dramatic.
The book has plenty of photographs and illustrations that try to bring these stories to life. There are also directions and maps to show you how to find these unusual and neglected parts of our heritage in Wales.
If you want to find our more about my book then log on to
www.storiesinwelshstone.co.uk .
The Western Mail newspaper in Wales said of it "this is a colourful and handsome book about passion, drama, injustice and tragedy."
I am also the author of a number of other books but is my Stories in Welsh Stone that is currently taking all my writing attention. Volume Two is complete and to be published I hope in 2009 and Volume Three almost finished. I hope there are people out there who will find some interest in the books, because I think the stories within them, which deal largely with ordinary people caught up in extra ordinary situations, are so important.

What is your interest in or connection to Wales?
I was born in Sheffield but marriage and career took me to Swansea in South Wales and I have become fascinated by the history of the ordinary people of the country in which I now live.
In the November edition of Welsh Country Magazine, we go to Caernarvon where, in 1844, a servant wanted two little girls to stop crying. The mother gave her some money to buy some gin but the servant knew a much more effective and cheaper remedy - which she administered with tragic consequences.
In December I examine six mysterious medieval graves by the side of an estuary at Llanfihangel Abercowyn in West Wales. You can see photos of them in my photo collection below.

E. T. Willows of Cardiff

He is remembered in the name of a street a pub and a school in Cardiff. His achievements are recorded on a clock face in Cardiff Bay but his grave lies forgotten and neglected in Cardiff’s Cathays Cemetery.

His gravestone tells us

Captain E. T. Willows

Only beloved son of Joseph and Eva Willows

Died August 3 1926

At rest

The letters on the simple stone are metal and are falling off. Without them his grave will lose its identity and become no different

The Coachman's Cautionary

On the A40 at halfway between Llandovery and Brecon there is a memorial to a stage coach disaster. If your speed is as unrestrained as that of the coach driver you could miss it. There is an obelisk enclosed by iron railings, next to a busy road. At the bottom of a steep slope on the other side of the road the Afon Gwydderig rushes and roars just as it did in 1835. On some maps it is marked simply by the word “Memorial.” But that single word does not do justice to the surprising nature of this s… Continue

The Story of Gelert

The Story of Gelert

Gelert is the name of a legendary dog which has become entwined with the village of Beddgelert in Gwynedd. And if you don’t already know it, the knowledge that the name of the village has been translated as “Gelert’s Grave” might give you some clue where this story is going.
The inscription on the tomb down by the river tells the story in both English and Welsh.

“In the 13 century Llewellyn, prince of Wales, had a place in Beddgelert.
One day he went hunting without Gelert,… Continue

Halloween

Halloween. It is one of the oldest festivals of all, and represents a curious mixture of many different traditions. The Celts called it Samhain, a festival that provided a boost for people as they entered the long dark winter months, when the countryside seemed dead and the days seemed so short. Over time it became mixed in with All Saints Day, a day set aside for those poor saints who didn’t have a day of their own.
Originally it represented the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a… Continue

Catapult Aircraft Merchantman

I have been working for quite a while on a fascinating story and I have finally managed to get it on my website - Stories in Welsh Stone. The address is at the foot of this blog. You can find it in the Shorter Tales section because there are too many gaps in my knowledge for me to publish it at present.
It is about Robert Everett a fighter pilot who died when his Hurricane crashed on the beach at llanddona in Anglesey in January 1942. He had an eventful life. In 1929 he won the Grand National ho… Continue
