Married
About Me:
I'm a first generation American of a Welsh father who immigrated to the US in the 1920's. As children we were exposed to some Welsh traditions and ways, but were never fully involved. My father and his siblings spoke some Welsh, but English was our language at home. I did not always have a good relationship with my father, and as I get older I wish that I knew more about him and our heritage. Many questions have been answered through some family tree research, but I need to know and feel more. My wife and I are planning a trip to Wales this summer (2009) to gain a deeper understanding and to see the country about which he always dreamed. Maybe I will better understand him.

Tourist Wales Top Ten

For you world travelers, I would like to know what you consider to be the top ten (okay, twenty if you want to) places to visit in Wales are.

We are elderly (not old) and are planning a visit this summer. We have booked a cottage at Bala so that I can attend the National Eisteddfod and we have booked a canal trip. We will be joined those two weeks by an exchange student from Luxembourg. I will also be doing a little geneology searching, but I have no known family left in Wales.

There is so muc… Continue

Welsh Language Programs

I am a first generation American of Welsh background who wants to learn Welsh. I have heard it spoken, more often sung, and have (or had) an ear for languages. I am planning to visit Wales this summer and would like to learn some Welsh (hopefully they won't be like the French when I make errors.) There are several programs available for conversational Welsh, and I'm wondering if any of you have a recommendation. I live in Montana where population is sparse and spread, so there are no language gr… Continue

Hello, Howard,

Thank you for your very interesting reply! I am very much looking forward to the Eisteddfod. I did not choose to go to the Swansea one a few years ago, as I was just starting to learn Welsh and felt I would not get much out of it. I've been studying for 6 years now and am more confident, plus I have watched the Eisteddfodd on S4C for the last few years. One of my former tutors is in charge of the Lerners' tent next summer, so that will be great. I have so many friends in South Wales now that it is like going home. I really think there is something to the theory of genetic memory, as even on my first trip, I felt like I had come home. Like you, I found everyone very friendly and helpful and just delighted that I was interested in the culture and language.

I have an artificial knee, which is why I was worried about the canal ride. I would be 100% but I tore it up again 6 months after the replacement and it is worse now than before! And, my doctor didn't keep my parts so he could put them back in! LOL! But, I muddle along....

My grandfather (the Welshman) was a 30-year Navy man, so I appreciate your years of service. My husband and I were both in the Air Force, but only for 4 years.

I will definitely get my friend in Aberbargoed to take me to the stone circle next summer--I am fascinated by them! Thanks for telling me about it.

It is funnty that you mentioned the Undeb Cymru a'r Byd tent, as I am on ther WNGGA Board and two of my committee members are with Cymru a'r Byd in North Wales. They are working on ways to promoted the North American Festival of Wales over there. We do get people from Wales attending every year, but always want to encourage more to come. Have you ever been to NAFOW? Next Labor Day weekend it is in Portland, OR, so not too far from you.

Anyway, thanks for telling me about your trip--it was nice to "meet" you!

Hi, Howard,

I will go to my first National Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale in 2010, so I am intereated in hearing what you thought of last year's? I watch on S4C, and have been to Wales 3 times before (2005, 2007, 2009). Also, I wanted to do a canal trip, but because I traveled solo, I was discouraged from trying it. I may look for a friend to go next summer--how was it? My grandfather's family (his uncles, grandfather, great-grandfather) came over in the 1830s-40s and settled in Baltimore to smalt copper. They were from around Swansea/Llanelli. A few of the family went to Butte in the late 1800s to smelt at the Parrot Smelter. I've been to MT--Butte and Great Falls, but not Billings (yet). Please tell me about your trip to Wales. Where were those stone circles in your photos? Diolch! Mona

Good evening Howard and thanks for your order. I shall get the book in the post as soon as I can. There is a postal strike in progress over here at the moment which may delay things but I shall keep you informed.
If you haven't found my website - www.storiesinwelshstone.co.uk - then you will see lots of material there which should help you pass the time until the book arrives!
I shall be in touch. Is there any particular dedication in the book that you require?
With my very best wishes
Geoff

I haven't the heart to tell you this, but someone must; I've just noticed that your 'croeso' is back to front in the middle; I won't tell anyone if you won't.

I wrote in earlier to 'Welsh Performers'; I've been watching Katherine Evans on You Tube, she's sublimely talented, I was nearly crying, but when I went to upload it, there was a protection notice, and on every one of Katherine's recordings, so I did the next best thing, I copied the song from i Tunes and put it onto my playlists.
