Welsh artists with weird names

When I was at the gym today, I happened to think "Hey, isn't Aphex Twin Welsh?". The answer, of course, is "yes". And there is another Welsh artist whose name is even further out there. It's Thighpaulsandra. I know the latter from his collaboration with Coil.

Thighpaulsandra is a bit edgy for me (I'm showing my age now), but Aphex Twin's ambient music is actually good stuff to listen to while running or lifting weights. I'm sure he'd be delighted to know how much he's helping middle-aged Americ… Continue

This day in history

On this day in Welsh history...nothing happened! So says the Welsh Calendar.
http://welshcalendar.blogspot.com/2008/12/maymai.html

But, and it's a big "but", the 18th was Bertrand Russell's birthday!

As a present to myself, I have just bought another copy of "Unpopular Essays", my well-worn copy having evaporated.

What a rare man. A giant of mathematics and philosophy who single-handedly challenged mathematical empiricism, Aristotle, and the Christian Church, he also had the courage of his po… Continue

Swansea/Linux trivium

Has anyone ever noticed that, during the Linux boot process, there used to be a kernel message "Based upon Swansea University Computer Society NET3.039"? It had to do with the TCP/IP networking stack, and was removed from the source code in 2003:

There are links on the page cited above to material about Linux hero Alan Cox, who still lives in Swansea. He is also the Technical Director of CymruNet http://wri.cymru.net/ .

Hey Mark, I dont really ave a preference on periods of history, as I find all to be quite interesting in their own peculiar ways. Seems to be a never ending change no matta wot happens.....As for music i listen to hard an heavy music Pantera, Down, COC, Sylosis, etc. Also like any type of rock and blues but the hair bands an hip-hop I dunna care for an techno doesn catch my fancy neither. Anything on yor end you'd like to share? Ave a good one, ta-da...Dare

Hi Mark-thank you for the kind comments. My paternal great grandmother was a Powell. Her father was a stone-mason in Ledbury [just over the Welsh border]-so we might be related lol.I wish I had your talent for taking photographs.Mine seem to consist of blurs and red eyes. What lovely children! Are they your daughters? My husband,Alistair, used to take many photographs of flowers, however he's more into his woodworking and metalworking now.Once I work out how to add pictures I'll put a few on.Best regards Bronwen.

Small world indeed! George is my dad :)

I spend most of my time supporting the game of lacrosse - thus I'll be at Zube Park all this weekend for the CF Boys tournament :)

Hello Mark,

Small world eh? Yes, I did some research and it does seem he had a very nonviolent past and thus was treated poorly regarding the visit here. All the best

Mark,, Reading your comment again, how awesome that you were able to trace so many generations back . I am trying my best to trace my Morris roots to Wales. It seems no one knows yet but I will eventually find the link. Let me know how your research goes. Were you actually able to meet any of your relatives? I have been very lucky to have met so many of my biological brothers & sisters and extended family. I just attended my very first Morris Family Reunion. I felt so accepted and I loved every minute of it........................the only thing my biological mother died at 39 years of age. I never got to meet her and I don't remember her. My twin brother, John and I were placed in a Children's Home in "Uniontown, Pa. in June of 1957. We were 4 years old, by her request. She died 3 days later. Mark after all my searching I have collected so many photos and documents, I had to prove everything to myself.....................I look exactly like my mother. IT gives me chills every time I look at her picture. It's been an amazing discovery to say the least. We were adopted into a very loving family.
